SHOPPERS will be able to "try before they buy" some fruit and vegetables as the supermarket giants crank up the war at the checkout.
Woolworths fresh foods general manager Pat McEntee said store managers were being encouraged to let customers sample slices of fresh produce to confirm quality and check new varieties.
Some are actively urging shoppers to ask for fruit taste tests through signs on new season produce stands.
Woolworths yesterday also pledged to join Coles by indefinitely slicing the cost of bread to as low as $1 a loaf.
"Our competitive position is to match the market," Woolworths spokeswoman Clare Buchanan said.
Woolworths Home Brand white bread is now $1, down 29c. Wholemeal and multigrain is $1.50, also down 29c.
The changes meet revised Coles SmartBuy costs revealed in the Herald Sun on Saturday.
