COLES will build its biggest Australian supermarket in Ipswich next year, in a $25 million project that will bring up to 300 new jobs to the city.

In an announcement made yesterday, the supermarket giant said it had earmarked its existing CBD site for the flagship store.

The current Limestone St store has been closed for business since January, when the store was inundated by floodwaters.

To mitigate against any future flooding, plans for the mammoth new superstore have the ground level set for parking with the supermarket itself to be 19.6m above the river.

Demolition of the present building should start in September or August this year, with the 6000sq m new store to open in July or September in 2012.
