Grocery wholesaler Metcash Ltd says it has received regulatory approval to acquire point-of-sale (POS) system provider Scanning Systems Australia (SSA).

Metcash said in a statement the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will not oppose the purchase after forming the view it is unlikely to substantially lessen competition.

Metcash is also a liquor and hardware wholesaler.

Chief executive Andrew Reitzer said the acquisition would enhance the company's ability to assist independent retailers to compete with the major chains.
