Retailers finally click to the online boom May 07, 2011

MORE than a decade since the tech sector crash put paid to expectations we'd all soon be living like the Jetsons, retailers are finally getting serious about selling over the internet.

David Jones, an early mover who launched a transactional website in 2000 only to shut it down three years later, is now planning an all-singing, all-dancing portal to bring the world of fashion to shopper's laps, while supermarket Coles is amassing a fleet of 250 refrigerated vans to ensure online shoppers don't have to worry about their ice cream melting before its reaches their doors.

Even Harvey Norman boss Gerry Harvey, for more than a decade the most sceptical of the bricks-and-mortar retailers regarding the opportunity/threat presented by online retailing, has jumped on the bandwagon with a site he says could be turning over as much as $1 billion in as little as five years.
