THE business and trade practices communities have welcomed the nomination of Rod Sims as chairman of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, in a move widely expected to usher in a lower-profile and more consultative regulator.
Mr Sims, an economist who is a director of business consultancy Port Jackson Partners but spends most of his time as chairman of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of NSW, is expected to start a five-year term on August 1.
But his appointment must first be approved by a majority of states and territories.
Mr Sims's nomination was unveiled yesterday by Wayne Swan, who also confirmed speculation in recent weeks that Australian Securities & Investments commissioner Greg Medcraft would get the ASIC chairman's job.
Mr Medcraft's elevation only needs the Governor-General to sign-off on it.
