EFFORTS to get Australia's first commercial contactless mobile payment system off the ground by early next year have been dealt a serious blow.
Coles Group said it was yet to commit to rolling out retail equipment for near field communication (NFC) across its food, liquor and fuel stores.
Adding to the challenge, Apple has not included the required hardware needed for contactless payments in its iPhone 4S handset .
When used with appropriate readers, NFC chips can turn smartphones into "wave and go" payment devices. It also lets them interact wirelessly with other devices which could be used to support new types of marketing schemes.
